Kashmir as an International exporter of Walnut

In India, Total of 97 thousand hectares lands is under walnut cultivation. Out of which, it is estimated that Jammu and Kashmir accounts 63,000 hectares with output of 60,000 tons worth 2500 million rupees. The rest of 34 hectares are cultivated in the state of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Arunachal Pradesh.Walnut cultivation is mainly practiced in Kashmir region, as it bears the most suitable climatic conditions and contributes for about 98% of the total production of fruit.

India stands eighth in Walnut production among other producers of the world. In India, Jammu and Kashmir hold a major production of Walnut in the country. The state produces about 60,000 tons from an area of 63,000 hectares. Walnut cultivation can be seen in places like Badrawah, Poonch, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora, Gandarbal Budgam, Srinagar, Anantanag, etc. In India, Walnuts are available in various shape and size and thus classified on the basis of their size and shell cracking.


Walnuts are marketed in the form of both nuts and Kernels. September onwards, Nuts of the fruit arrive in the market but kernels need about two or three more weeks more than nuts Maximum produce of Walnuts from Jammu and Kashmir is used for exports within and outside India.
